So it's settled. I gave my notice on my apartment today and moving to Canada to be with Dave in Vancouver. We've started the paperwork to apply for my Permanent Resident status so I can legally live and work in Canada. It's not citizenship, as one of Dave's friend's put it, it's "Canada-Light."
The nice thing about Canadian immigration is that unlike American immigration I can cross the border practically as I please during the process. Under the US system Dave would have had to not leave the US under any circumstances until his travel permit came through six months later. It wasn't something we were looking forward to.
I'm also allowed to work during the process, but not for a Canadian company. Luckily, this is the internet age and I can work remotely for just about anyone in the US on an onsite basis if need be. Plus, since Dave's business is doing pretty well I can afford to be somewhat choosy about what companies or projects I work on. It's a good opportunity for me to take a step back a reconsider my advertising career while trying on some client side work and seeing how it fits.
We're putting an immigration lawyer on retainer next week and putting the finishing touches on the application hopefully before I head back to LA on the 5th.
I'll miss LA. I'll miss my friends and I'll miss the culture (you heard me - CULTURE! LA does indeed have culture), but I'm really looking forward to learning about Vancouver and making new friends.
First task - finding a decent site for keeping track of local events. Hey Gothamist! When are you starting a Vancouver blog?
